Pizzelle

Pizzelle are one of the few traditional Italian cookies that I can make on my own. But this year I was lucky to have my mom's help with them. We traditionally make them for Christmas. This year we added a "secret ingredient" we picked up in Calabria. Any guesses on what it is?

I acquired a small amount of black anise when I was in Calabria. What I learned when I was there is that it is a wild plant (selvatico) and no one is interested in collecting the seeds any more. A few people had tried but, at the time, were still not able to cultivate the wild plant.
